noun. – a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with the desire to eat.
verb. – have a strong desire or craving for.
What do you hunger for? What do you crave?
When I think of hunger I automatically think of food. What am I craving today?
To be completely transparent I sometimes think about food a lot. I think about breakfast before going to bed and think about lunch when eating breakfast. And think about what sweet things I can bake over the week for the weekend.
But today, when reading the She Read Truth passage, I started to think about hunger. Hunger is really what consumes your mind. Am I hungry for wealth, love, food, or God?
When we hunger we crave what we are missing, or at least think we are missing. We are trying to fill a void that has left us wanting more.
In the food way, we want something to fill our stomach but in the spiritual way… we are longing to fill a void with things that will not satisfy our hunger.
In John 6:26 “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you….””
Right before this passage, Jesus had just fed the 5,000. Jesus had filled the stomachs of over 5,000 people and many of them were coming to him again.
Jesus knew they were just coming again to get fed, but Jesus also knew that they would always be hungry, physically and spiritually until the realized that the Son of Man was standing before them.
What really strikes me about this passage is that they had just heard Jesus preaching and seen the amazing miracle that Jesus just performed and yet they still did not understand. They still were focused on the here and now, not the eternal life that Jesus was talking about.
My question, to me, is: how many times am I looking for something to fill the void with in me and looking at the completely wrong thing?
I think the answer is – most of the time. I am looking for so many worldly things like new clothes, fitness, a perfect job, a new hobby, friends, etc…… yet what I need to be looking for is Jesus.
If I would just focus on Him alone… I would be filled. Filled to the brim, overflowing! just like those baskets of loaves and fishes.
How simple yet so hard.
My prayer for me and also you today is that we may fill our void with Jesus. And stop looking to everything else that this world has to offer. That we take our eyes off things that just leave us hungry the next day and feed ourselves with the Word of God that is everlasting.
Passage to read and think on today: John 6
“I am the bread of life, Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
