So for about a month to a month and a half I have been wading through the waters of Intuitive Eating.
I have had my “bad” days but for the most part I am feeling great about it.
I am learning how to listen to my body and learning how to eat the way I think we were created to eat and enjoy food/ life.
So I wanted to kind of start a small series on how I am eating.
The first rule that I am learning how to implement in my life is: Eat like a Tortoise.
I know this sounds weird and it doesn’t mean eat only green things, it means eat slowly.
Just like the story of the tortoise and the hare. The tortoise took his time and ended up winning in the end. I think it is the same way with food. People who rush through eating are only hurting themselves in the long run. Most people, in my opinion, who eat fast have weight issues.
I have the privilege of being a wellness specialist. I work with people everyday on how to be healthier, to lose weight, to exercise more. And I hear all the time, ” I know what to do, I just don’t do it”Most of the time their solution to their weight issue is to either eat less carbs, eat more protein, workout more, etc.
But I really think the main issue comes down to their relationship with food. They have been on diet and lost and regained back all the weight and then more. So obviously that stuff did not work at all. There has to be another way.
And I think one of the first ways to stop this crazy diet cycle of food is to sloooooow down. Like really stop eating while on the go, or in less than 10 minutes. I think the key to having a healthy weight is slooowing down, and actually tasting your food.
How many times have you seen someone driving and then eating, or someone walking down the street shoveling food in their mouth, or eating popcorn in the theater without even thinking about what they are putting in their mouths?
I am sure your answer has to be way to many times to count.
We, including me, have to slow down and actually chew and enjoy the food that is in front of us.
Tips for slowing down and enjoying your food:
- Chew your food (at least 20 times) – really try and count. count how many times your would normally chew your food and then make yourself count and slow down. It’s harder than you think.
- Sit down for a meal. – Don’t eat standing up. Sit down and really enjoy each bite. Usually if your standing you are eating too fast.
- Set a timer for 15 minutes and make your food last that long. – Your body can not even tell your full until then.
- Set your fork down, or your sandwich, or spoon or whatever down between bites.
What do you think? – Do you think a main issue with food today is how fast we are eating? Do you eat fast or slow? Any tips or tricks?
